A ketogenic diet is when there is a lot of fat, a little less protein and a little more carbohydrates. Nutritionists originally developed it for the treatment of epilepsy in children. When carbohydrate intake decreases, the liver converts fats into fatty acids and ketones, which enter the brain and are used as an energy source, not glucose. And an increase in the level of ketones in the blood (or ketosis) reduces the frequency of epileptic seizures.
